Registration Information:

  • Registration will take place in person beginning Tuesday, June 9th at 10:00am at the Barnsdall Junior Arts Center.
  • Class fees payable in cash OR check ONLY, to City of LA, DCA.
  • Parents must provide photo ID if paying with check — if they (check owner and payer) are not present they must send whoever is present with a photo of their ID.
  • Lab fees and Registration will be processed via Eventbrite, so ensure you have your phone/device ready for use when you arrive and that you have created an Eventbrite account in advance.
  • Visit our website or contact us to find out which classes are still available. Waitlists will be available for Sold Out Classes.
  • The cashier cannot provide change greater than $25.

Explore your creativity by combining materials such as drawing, painting, collage, and found objects. Through themes of environment, transformation, and experimentation, students will investigate how materials interact, change, and take on new meaning. They will explore layering, texture, and composition while developing confidence across mediums. Along the way, students will consider questions like: How do materials influence the way we create? What can transformation reveal in an artwork?

This class invites students to closely observe and translate everyday objects into expressive artworks. Through themes of personal experience and storytelling, students will explore how objects can hold both individual and shared meaning. They will develop skills in shading, proportion, composition, and texture while experimenting with pencil, ink, and mixed media.

Dive into the sticky, fun world of Mod Podge! This exciting craft class is designed for young artists (ages 5-7) ready to get creative. We’ll use Mod Podge—a magical glue, sealer, and finish—to transform everyday items into unique, personalized treasures. Kids will learn various techniques by layering paper, fabric, and other materials to make colorful crafts they can proudly take home. A fantastic way to explore texture, design, and imaginative projects!

This is a two part media art class to make beautifully bound blank books. The first day of class students will create several sheets of hand marbled paper, which will be left in class to dry. The second week of class students will fold, punch and bind their personal books. Books will be made with 20 lb white paper and will have marbled paper covers. Class Dates: (Wk1) 7/8 (Wk2) 7/15

JW3 5 – 7 Personal Sewn Books Aviva Weiner 2 pm – 3:30 pm 2 weeks $9 $10 10

This is a two part media art class to make beautifully bound blank books. Young architects (ages 7-12) will explore the structures of the Barnsdall and learn about geometric patterns, Mayan-inspired forms, and how Wright abstracted the hollyhock flower into a signature motif. Students will create their own masterpieces inspired by the history and beauty of Olive Hill. Join us!

Students will photograph street art and/or nature in order to examine and develop an abstract photo. We will examine what everyone sees but highlight micro elements to create our abstract photos. Students will work in photoshop to create and enhance these abstract qualities.

Public Land Acknowledgement

It is important that we prioritize respect for both the historic culture and the contemporary presence of indigenous peoples throughout California, and especially in the Los Angeles area. To that end, and particularly as a public and civic institution, we acknowledge that our facility resides on what was historically the homeland of Kizh, Tongva, and Chumash peoples who were dispossessed of their land.
