Only one (1) jewelry OR one (1) ceramics class per person

Intermediate-level classes require approval from the Teaching Artist before you can enroll. Pre-requisites include having taken a beginner class in the medium at Barnsdall Arts Center or having equivalent experience outside of the Center.

Students will submit the provided form along with a portfolio of 2-3 photos of artwork in the medium for the Teaching Artist to review. They will be notified by staff if they are approved to join the class, waitlisted, or denied. See below for details.

*Note: Due to limited spots, it is possible to be approved but waitlisted. The waitlist is contacted in the event that an approved student ahead of you does not come in to enroll before the deadline.

Using Glue sticks & scissors, cut n paste, Image transfer, desktop printing, collage, mixed media as our process, and some lo-fi mentality, we shall create artworks on various surfaces and also in your sketchbooks. Students will learn the fundamentals of jewelry design and fabrication through three curated projects designed to introduce essential metalsmithing skills. Working with non-ferrous metals, students will learn to use jewelry-making hand tools and develop foundational techniques including sawing, roller mill texturing, ring sizing, stamping, annealing, soldering, marriage of metals, wire forming, and patination. Emphasis is placed on learning proper fabrication techniques, developing craftsmanship, and building confidence in design and problem-solving. This 8-week course is ideal for students who want to establish a solid foundation in metalsmithing or continue developing their skills through traditional sheet-metal fabrication. Bringing the many into harmony as a unified one, mosaic is an ancient and engaging process that has great relevance to our busy modern existence. In a calm and alert state of mind we employ gentle hands to find the mosaic as it develops before us. Participants will learn various styles of mosaic and the many principles on which it’s based. Students will examine examples of Fine Art Photography and consider how different approaches relate to their own work. This beginner class will help you learn to control, center, open, form & shape simple pots. CLICK HERE FOR CLASS SCHEDULE + STUDENT MATERIALS LIST In this writing workshop, students will investigate the (very) short story tradition as both writers and readers, honing their craft in writing “micro” stories less than 500 words. We will investigate the foundational craft elements of a short story of any length: plot, scene, character, setting, voice, and the representation of time. Students will learn about the unique structure of the very short story and write their own microwritings. Then, we will workshop student writing in a traditional writing workshop, where each student will submit a piece of writing to be discussed and critiqued by the class.

Over eight weeks, students will explore analog documentary photography, shooting black-and-white film on location and developing and printing their work in the darkroom. Each week combines an evening field shoot with a darkroom session, allowing students to experience the complete process from capturing a moment to creating a finished print. This is an immersive, collaborative class for photographers interested in documenting real places, people, and events after dark. Prerequisites: Some prior photography experience required. Students should be comfortable shooting outdoors at night in urban environments and working collaboratively in the field and darkroom. Students must provide their own 35mm camera capable of manual exposure. First day of class mandatory. Failure to attend will result in removal from class, no exceptions.

Over eight weeks, you’ll learn to see light and shadow, paint from curated references, mix beautiful skin tones, and study the face through focused exercises in eyes, ears, lips, and nose, building toward a full portrait. The course wraps with a live model session where everything comes together. Each class is hands-on and encouraging, designed to meet you where you are. Students will explore jewelry as both a wearable object and an interactive experience through two curated fidget jewelry projects. Along the way, students will learn to use essential jewelry-making hand tools, understand the properties of non-ferrous metals, and develop techniques including sawing, roller mill texturing, riveting, bracelet sizing, annealing, soldering, jump ring making, and patination. This 8-week course emphasizes creative experimentation, movement, texture, and unconventional design while teaching proper jewelry-making techniques. Students will learn the basics of Adobe Illustrator, a vector-based design program widely used in the creative industry, while becoming familiar with essential digital tools, techniques, and terminology. Each class includes in-class demonstrations, online instruction/videos, hands-on exercises, creative dialogue, and class projects. Students should expect some out-of-class time to complete assigned exercises and projects. Students must bring their own laptop and purchase an Adobe Illustrator subscription.

Garment assembly will rely on standard sewing techniques, together with quasi-stitching, such as Velcro, zippers, glue and tape. Topics will include assemblage and collage in the art world and looking at designers whose fashion work addresses recycling through the use of repurposed textiles. First day of class mandatory. CLICK HERE FOR CLASS SCHEDULE + STUDENT MATERIALS LIST Immerse yourself in the possibilities of printmaking with a common item from your recycling bin: Tetra Pak (beverage cartons). This humble material produces results with a surprising level of depth and detail, and the process is low-cost and non-toxic. This class is suitable for first-timers, and is ideal for people who have some experience with Tetra Pak but want to expand their knowledge. We’ll cover the basics and beyond. You will use traditional and non-traditional mark making techniques, and print your work using the Barnsdall etching press. You’ll use non-toxic AKUA inks and learn how to alter them for different effects. You’ll also be able to explore advanced techniques including chine-colle and adding monotype layers to your work. Students will explore chemical ratios and darkroom techniques while learning how to control contrast, burning, and dodging. The class will focus on developing individual prints and refining them through the printing process to create finished photographs that students are proud to take home. First day of class mandatory. Then, we will workshop student writing in a traditional writing workshop, where each student will submit a piece of writing to be discussed and critiqued by the class.

Over eight weeks, students will explore analog documentary photography, shooting black-and-white film on location and developing and printing their work in the darkroom. Each week combines an evening field shoot with a darkroom session, allowing students to experience the complete process from capturing a moment to creating a finished print. This is an immersive, collaborative class for photographers interested in documenting real places, people, and events after dark. Prerequisites: Some prior photography experience required. Students should be comfortable shooting outdoors at night in urban environments and working collaboratively in the field and darkroom. This humble material produces results with a surprising level of depth and detail, and the process is low-cost and non-toxic. This class is suitable for first-timers, and is ideal for people who have some experience with Tetra Pak but want to expand their knowledge. We’ll cover the basics and beyond. You will use traditional and non-traditional mark making techniques, and print your work using the Barnsdall etching press. You’ll use non-toxic AKUA inks and learn how to alter them for different effects. You’ll also be able to explore advanced techniques including chine-colle and adding monotype layers to your work.
