Frequently Asked Questions

By registering for a class with Barnsdall Arts, you agree to the policies below. Please read them carefully before signing up. Failure to follow policy may result in not being able to register for following sessions.

The Barnsdall Arts Center strives to have a safe and respectful environment for all.

General Questions

How old do I need to be to take a class at the Barnsdall Arts Center (BAC)?

Students must be 18 years or older to enroll in a Barnsdall Arts Center class. Seniors age 62 years and older qualify for a class fee discount.

Do I need to purchase supplies? 

Yes, material lists will be provided upon registration. Students are responsible for purchasing tools and art supplies before the start of class.

What if I will need to be absent a few times during the session?

Please communicate absences with the front office. If you must drop a class, please give at least 48 hour notice prior to the first day of class.

Why do I need to provide my email/phone number?

Notices (class cancellations, schedule changes, etc.) are sent via email. Emergency notifications are done by phone.

I forgot my tools and/or artwork last session. Can I pick them up next session?

Any artwork and tools left at the end of each session will be considered abandoned and will be handled at the discretion of the Arts Center. The Arts Centers are not responsible for lost/stolen/damaged artwork or personal belongings.

What if I am feeling sick during the session?

If you are feeling unwell or have flu-like symptoms, please stay home for everyone’s wellness and contact us through phone or email to report your absence.

We strongly recommend and encourage students to wear a mask if they are not feeling well.

Common Registration Questions

How many classes can I sign up for?

Due to our limited programming, please refrain from signing up for more than one (1) class during this registration period.

Can I reserve a registration spot ahead of time?

No, all classes are “first come, first served.”

How do I pay for the class?

Class and Lab fees will be collected during the registration period.
Per Department of Cultural Affairs policy, Class fees can only be paid via Cash or Check. No Debit/Credit Cards.
Lab fees will be processed via Eventbrite, so be sure to have your phone/device ready for use.

Can I get a refund?

Lab fees are non-refundable except in the case of cancellation of a class due to low enrollment.
Class fee credits and/or changes are available and must be requested before the 2nd class in the session. Credits are good for one (1) year from the date issued.
Refunds for class fees paid by check can only be processed if a copy of the check and receipt is provided.

Is financial assistance available to me?

Financial Assistance is available for one (1) class per calendar year, per person, per family. The applicant understands that financial assistance will ONLY be awarded if the applicant attends 90% of the classes for the session.  If the applicant does not attend 90% of the classes, financial assistance is withdrawn and the applicant will be billed for the class/es attended during the session.
Financial Assistance applications must be submitted no later than one (1) week before the first day of registration.

PLEASE NOTE: Receiving financial assistance does not guarantee a slot in the class identified on the application form and approval letter. The applicant MUST ALSO complete the registration procedures for that class and bring the approval letter as payment.

 What if I signed up for a friend/relative under my name?

The person whose name is registered is the only one who may attend the class. Please ensure you contact the office if your name does not match the our rosters on the first day of class.

I’m on the waitlist for a class. How does it work?

Waitlists will start once the class becomes full. As spots become available, waitlisted students will receive an email through Eventbrite informing them they have 24 hours to register.

Why was my class cancelled?

All classes are at risk of cancellation after the first class meeting if at least 50% of the class slots are not filled. In case of a cancellation due to low enrollment, students will be notified immediately by email. The lab fees will be refunded. 

Common Campus & Studio Questions

What if I need ADA access?

The Arts Center has an elevator located in the parking lot between the Handicap parking and the Kiln Shed. The elevator is accessible throughout the session during office hours.

Where can I park?

Free parking is available on-site at Barnsdall Art Park on a “first come, first served” basis. Please be aware that the parking lot can get very busy during peak times, particularly on the weekends. Please allow extra time to find parking before class.

Can I bring my friend/family member/etc. to class?

Only enrolled students are allowed in the studios.

Are snacks/drinks/alcohol allowed? Can I vape/smoke in the studios?

Food is not allowed in the studios. Water bottles and sealed beverages are allowed. Alcoholic beverages and smoking/vaping are not permitted in BAC facilities.

Are there restrooms available?

Restrooms are available for student use only. Please ask your instructor for the restroom code. DO NOT share this code with anyone or open restroom doors for members of the public.

Can I access the studios outside of class time for personal or commercial use?

Use of Barnsdall Arts Center studios, equipment, materials, and supplies for commercial purposes is strictly prohibited. All projects and activities in the studios may be subject to the approval of the Teaching Artist and/ or Art Education Coordinator.

What time does Barnsdall Art Park open?

Barnsdall Art Park (BAP) is open daily from 6 am until 10 pm.

City Policies

 Standard Appearance Release

I understand that the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) is dedicated to providing educational programs and arts training to young people and adults through its community arts and cultural facilities. To describe and promote its efforts, the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs will produce audio, video, photographs, and printed materials. I authorize the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, in collaboration with the participants in such programs and arts training, to record, edit, change, modify, display, present, reproduce, distribute the name, image, voice, likeness, artwork, interview, and/or performance of me and combine any or all of the same with the names, images, voices, likenesses, artwork, interviews, and performances of other participants in the above-named programs and training. All videotape, audiotape, printed materials, and photographs shall be owned by and are the property of the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs.

 Accessibility

It is the policy of the City of Los Angeles to provide access to its programs and services for persons with disabilities in accordance with Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, as amended. As a covered entity under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the City of Los Angeles does not discriminate on the basis of disability and, upon request, will provide reasonable accommodation to ensure equal access to its programs, services, and activities.

 Indemnification

Except for the active negligence or willful misconduct of the CITY, or any of its Boards, Officers, Agents, Employees, Assigns and Successors in interest, Student undertakes and agrees to defend, indemnify and hold harmless the CITY and any of its Boards, Officers, Agents, Employees, Assigns, and Successors in interest from and against all suits and causes of action, claims, losses, demands and expenses, including, but not limited to, attorney’s fees (both in house and outside counsel) and costs of litigation (including all actual litigation costs incurred by the CITY, including but not limited to, costs of experts and consultants), damages or liability of any nature whatsoever, for death or injury to any person, including Student employees and agents, or damage or destruction of any property of either party hereto or of third parties, arising in any manner by reason of the negligent acts, errors, omissions or willful misconduct incident to the performance of this Agreement by Student or for any reason giving six (6) months written notice to the other party.

 Off Site Class Sessions

From time to time class sessions for certain courses offered by the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs in the Barnsdall Arts Center and Barnsdall Junior Arts Center will be held off site or in another location within the Park. It is the policy  of the City of Los Angeles that students enrolled in these courses must indemnify the City of Los Angeles, its departments, divisions, elected officials, executives, managers, employees, and agents of all liability for damages or  personal injury resulting from their enrolling and participation in the off-site activities of these courses.
